In a case of jaundice for evaluation the inital modality of choice is ultrasonography which determines the jaundice is weather medical or surgical.

Medical jaundice is due to viral infection - most common being Hepatitis A - Feco-oral route of infection.

Next is surgical jaundice - due to obstruction in the course of biliary drainage.
